Selecting Colors for Your Room

Whether they’re thinking of painting one room or their entire home, many people only consider the main color for the walls without thinking about how the details play in to the entire aesthetic. And in fact, those details are very important and can frequently round out the look of the space entirely. At Window Treats serving Monmouth Beach, we’re happy to help our customers consider an entire room when it comes to color. Read on for a few tips on how to approach it.

How to Decide on Room Colors

Always consider how colors might come together in terms of an overall look. A great tool to use for this is a color wheel, which can show you the relationships between colors. If you want complementary colors, choose ones that are directly across the wheel from each other. If you want analogous color, choose colors that are next to each other. Finally, think about the overarching feel for the room—do you want bold, bright colors to create energy, or do you want mellower colors, to create a sense of repose?

Consider the Baseboards

Baseboards are a frequently overlooked detail in a space, but they can really tie color together. They don’t always have to be just white—remember, though, that consistency is the key. You don’t necessarily have to use the same color in all the rooms, but in each room, to create a seamless experience, keep them the same. Here are a few other things to think about:

  • Use stain to bring back a feel of real wood and create a rich, warm, traditional feel. Use lighter stains with lighter walls and darker stains with darker walls.
  • Use cream, off-white, or ivory to offset a dark wall. Keep in mind, though, these lighter colors could be tinged with blue or pink undertones, so be sure to consult a color professional to get the right shade.
  • Use dark colors on the baseboards to achieve a contemporary look in the space. It’s especially good for smaller rooms because it can add depth.

Adding Window Treatments

Window treatments can also help tie a color system together. Think about balancing bright, bold walls with a neutral window treatment. Duette® Cellular Shades are available in many neutral colors and offer great aesthetics as well as other benefits. Balance neutral-colored walls with window treatments that have a hint of color or pattern.
