Contemporary or Modern Style?

Hunter Douglas Parkland® Wood Blinds

When it comes to home decorating, numerous styles pervade across the spectrum. The two that are most often confused are “contemporary” and “modern” because the names are very similar. But at Window Treats serving Monmouth Beach, we can not only help you determine which is your actual style; we can also help you figure out which window treatments will complement it the best. Check out some notes below!

Telling Which Is Which

Even though “contemporary” and “modern” might appear together in a thesaurus, in fact, they are associated with two different styles. “Contemporary” actually refers to what’s current, while “modern” relates to “mid-century modern” from the 1950s and 60s. While modern style emphasizes crisp lines and warm neutrals, contemporary style is more fluid and might actually mean something different five years from now than it does today.

Window Treatments for These Styles

To enhance a modern style, choose treatments in earthy or bright white colors and natural materials. Good options include drapery, wood blinds, and shades. Wood blinds are particularly good because they stand the test of time, both in style and in durability, and they bring the beauty of the outdoors in. Parkland® Wood Blinds from Hunter Douglas are made from real hardwoods, like cherry, basswood, and oak. To complement a contemporary style, choose metal blinds for a sleek look in your space. Modern Precious Metals® blinds are a good option; they are available in a wide range of finishes, such as metallics, mattes, and pearlescent colors, so you can accentuate your windows and your room.

Blending

For a touch of both modern and contemporary looks, blend them! You could choose Design Studio™ Roller Shades, which are clean and uncluttered, for a minimalist approach to complement any style. Or choose drapery for either a modern or contemporary look. Drapery can be great as a standalone window fashion or paired with an existing blind or shade, which can help cut light gaps. They’re also great on larger windows, because they can emphasize the lines of the room.
