Should You Choose Curtains or Select Drapery for Your Home?

Should You Select Drapery or Curtains

At Window Treats serving Monmouth Beach, part of our commitment to helping customers get the products they want and need is educating on the terminology of the window fashions industry. Which includes helping them understand the differences between various products. Today, we’re talking about curtains and drapes, both of which have great benefits. Read on to learn more about the differences between curtains and drapes.

Differences in Fabric

You’ll usually find drapes in thicker fabrics like velvet, which makes them appear more formal; they’re also often lined to block glare and add insulation. Curtains are usually made from sheer fabrics like cotton, which is a bit more casual; the thinner fabrics tend to let more natural light. And while drapes are usually cut floor length or longer (so they puddle beneath the window), curtains tend to be cut just at the windowsill or slightly below.

Differences in Functionality

Drapes offer more privacy and light control, and their heavier fabric can block light and absorb sound. If your room calls for more natural light and you’re not worried about privacy, curtains could be a good option. You should also consider how each type is installed—while both can hang on a rod, curtains, with their lighter fabric, can hang on a tension rod, but drapery can’t. Drapes work better in living rooms and bedrooms, while curtains do well in kitchens, laundry rooms, and bathrooms.

Differences in Maintenance

Drapery requires professional cleaning, while with curtains, you can frequently simply wash them in a regular washer on a gentle cycle in cool water. If you’re OK with more effort for cleaning drapes, they might work well for you. No matter your choice, curtains or drapes, the Hunter Douglas Design Studio™ offers a wide array of fabrics and hardware to create your unique look at your window.
